The Seniors Consortium is a strategic partnership between NextGen for Earth, the Medical College of Wisconsin, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Health. Together, the partners are advancing groundbreaking research examining the impact of extreme weather events on older adults in rural Busia and Kilifi counties in Kenya.
This pioneering initiative investigates how climate-related shocks shape health outcomes, wellbeing, and care systems for ageing populations, while also examining the experiences of healthcare workers operating within climate-vulnerable settings. The research interrogates patterns of exposure, vulnerability, coping strategies, and resilience at both household and system levels.
Central to the Consortium’s approach is co-design — working collaboratively with communities, local leaders, and policymakers to generate contextually grounded, evidence-informed responses. By integrating scientific inquiry with lived experience and policy engagement, the Seniors Consortium represents the first comprehensive climate–ageing study of its kind in these regions, positioning the partnership at the forefront of global climate and health research focused on older populations.
