Adolescent Mental Health and Hygiene in a Changing Climate
Climate change is placing growing pressure on adolescents. Scarcity of water, food insecurity, and environmental stress are affecting their mental health and personal hygiene. Girls face additional challenges, including limited access to sanitary towels, while both girls and boys often lack basic undergarments—impacting their comfort, confidence, and school participation.
NEXTGEN responds through school outreach led by trained youth mentors. These mentors educate students about climate change and provide peer-led support on mental health and hygiene. All our youth mentors have undergone safeguarding training to ensure they engage with students in a safe, respectful, and responsible manner. In partnership with teachers, they help identify struggling learners and ensure they receive appropriate support. Support includes counseling, open dialogue, and the distribution of sanitary towels and undergarments for both girls and boys. This youth-driven, empathetic approach builds resilience and dignity in the face of climate-related hardships.
